Everyday moves
Auto arrange
Windows take their place as they open, in the layout you pick.
Turn it on
Open the menu bar panel and pick a layout under Arrange.
Layouts
| Key | Layout |
|---|---|
| ⌃⌥⌘1 | Grid |
| ⌃⌥⌘2 | Columns |
| ⌃⌥⌘3 | Rows |
| ⌃⌥⌘4 | Focus |
| ⌃⌥⌘5 | Your grid |
Grid and Focus put the main window on top on a tall screen, and Focus keeps two large windows on an ultrawide.
The main window
In Settings > Arrange, under Layout, Main window can be the same as the others, half, 60% or two thirds of the screen.
When the screen is full
Choose this in Settings > Arrange:
- Slide extras off screen: extra windows wait past the left and right edges. Click a screen edge, or hold ⌃⌥ and use the mouse wheel, to move the layout along.
- Stack after a number of windows: extra windows stack with tabs, after 2, 3, 4 or 6 windows.
Windows that won't shrink
Some apps have a minimum size. Findow learns it and moves split lines to fit. Sizes are read a moment after a move, and Settings > Arrange can forget them.
Move windows
- Drag one tile onto another to swap them, or press ⌃⌥⇧← or ⌃⌥⇧→.
- Hold ⌃⌥ to see a map of your windows, then click one to go to it or drag it to reorder.
- Give an app a fixed position in Settings > Arrange. Position 1 is the main window.
